Not warehousing, but as part of the family, just because they like them and have a good life to offer them. ~~ As for the USDA thing it depends on breed too. One litter of livestock guardian dogs can be 12-15 puppies, of which a good breeder will be keeping at least a few back to evaluate and/or sell as young adults. All intact, because no responsible large dog breeder is going to be altering those dogs young. That can quickly put them over USDA number rules...yet, still be as far from an irresponsible puppy mill as one can get.Wendynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810033429461791744.post-51872573129956173262014-07-24T08:50:17.456-04:002014-07-24T08:50:17.456-04:00Yah, I figured the original article was written wh...Yah, I figured the original article was written when the USDA hadn't stuck their nose in. And I agree that a breeder who makes it a "BIG DEAL GOOD THING" that they're USDA licensed should require a 2nd look and very likely decision to look elsewhere.....

Leah, my understanding is that as long as you've got less than 5 it doesn't apply. BUT, unless they've changed the wording in the last couple months (since I last looked at it) the actual language doesn't require that all 5 "breed-able females" be of the same species. Its generally being interpreted that way, but the actual language doesn't specify. So in theory someone could get in trouble for 3 bitches and 2 queens and selling one pup or kitten "site unseen".Ruthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11924993310937754220noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810033429461791744.post-61316102137790414712014-07-22T00:30:29.130-04:002014-07-22T00:30:29.130-04:00I didn't get into wise v. unwise choice of bre...I didn't get into wise v. unwise choice of breeds/types here, but obviously that is relevant to your first point.Heather Houlahanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13891198124130533198noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810033429461791744.post-47500210901130995572014-07-22T00:29:18.205-04:002014-07-22T00:29:18.205-04:00The USDA rule extension was not the case when this...The USDA rule extension was not the case when this post was first published as an article.

I should say that any breeder who ADVERTISES that she is USDA-licensed as if this was some kind of accomplishment is proclaiming something to you.

Fewer than five breeding (or the elusive "breedable") bitches and USDA doesn't apply.Heather Houlahanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13891198124130533198noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810033429461791744.post-65411503118009705442014-07-21T17:47:02.169-04:002014-07-21T17:47:02.169-04:00I'd add another two- the breeder's dogs ca...I'd add another two- the breeder's dogs can go on a walk without collapsing of exhaustion/hiding from everything around them/having to breathe through their mouth because the nose won't do the job. Under current laws all a breeder has to do is own a minimum number of "breed-able bitches" (I believe its 5, which isn't really that many dogs), which the USDA categorizes as female dogs as young as 6 months, and sell even one pup where the owner doesn't pick up the pup on site. For rarer breeds like my TM, every breeder I know has sold a pup "site unseen". Heck, my Apollo's breeder shipped two from his litter to Europe. They certainly fit every other requirement you listed (and that I have) but the breed just isn't common enough.Ruthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11924993310937754220noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810033429461791744.post-29286035006473919562014-07-16T15:45:58.087-04:002014-07-16T15:45:58.087-04:00Awesome post, as usual!Awesome post, as usual!Susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18087070645740489255noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810033429461791744.post-65376278360266728452014-07-16T11:58:05.234-04:002014-07-16T11:58:05.234-04:00Can't wait for the follow-up post! Can't wait for the follow-up post!Shannon Larkinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15551622255822820849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810033429461791744.post-70070939793402392192014-07-16T08:09:40.205-04:002014-07-16T08:09:40.205-04:00Love this and will be sharing.
